Summary
I led a hands-on workshop at World Maker Faire - New York - 2015!
Title: "Hands On Intro To Electronics"
My team and I handed out free basic kits. This was our second year presenting there.
Maker Faire
Well, it's a circus for the mind and soul. It's pretty huge, fun, ...educational (or not). You do NOT have to be a Maker* to enjoy it! (*or a hobbyist, builder, engineer, techie type, etc.)
The World Maker Faire offers a great mix of art, physical abilities, and thought. Come see circus performers, the Coke-Mentos fountain, the giant-size Mousetrap machine! There will be live music performers too.
There are many opportunities for kids to make cool stuff. Robots, remote-controlled objects, colorful crafts. There’s also plenty of food, drink and artisan vendors. There will be many exhibitors, handing out stuff, selling things, and demonstrating cool tools, like 3D printers, 3D scanners, lasers, soldering, metal-working, and so on.
And if that wasn't enough, the Faire admission includes the Hall of Science and its exhibits.
As in the past, the Maker Faire takes place at the New York Hall of Science, in Queens, New York City, New York. Directions on how to get to the Hall of Science are here.
The Maker Faire takes over the whole property! Give yourself plenty of time to explore. The layout map is here (PDF file).
Maker Faires take place at other times and places, around the world. While they may be smaller than NY's, the enthusiasm is just as strong. If you can't make it to this one, look for one near you.
My Details
My team and I were there both days:
- Saturday — 12:15 PM to 1:15 PM — MAKE: Workshop area.
- Sunday — 12:45 PM to 1:45 PM — MAKE: Workshop area.
The "MAKE: Workshop" area is indoors, tucked inside the Hall of Science. This year, it was on the bottom floor, inside the wooden truss structure.
The kit we handed out had everything to build Projects #1 thru #3 on this website: the parts are listed here on my blog. The participants and I built all of them, together, including each hack and mod.
An instruction sheet is included with the kit:
Thank You's
A big Thank You goes to my employer, Consumer Reports, for providing the materials, space and time to build the kits. A big Thank You goes to José A., for helping us with the Spanish version of the instruction sheet.
More details about me are on the Maker Faire website here.
