This is my own scale, created for the purposes of this blog. It's not scientific, not based on any real data. My "For who" personas are not official.
So how difficult is it to build the given circuit or project? I'll answer it this way: "how much knowledge or experience should you have to get it done in about half-hour's time". If you have more (or less) knowledge per the project rating, you'll probably get it done sooner (or later). In reality, a scale like this is not linear — not every imaginable circuit can be built in just 30 minutes, even by an expert!
But I keep the circuits easy here. I'll only post projects that are below level 5.
Rating | For who | Knowledge & Experience |
---|---|---|
1 | Absolute Beginner | You've neither read about nor built any circuit. |
2 | Beginner | You've read about electronics but never built a circuit. |
3 | Elementary | You've built a circuit (and want to build more!) |
4 | Intermediate | You've built and understand a few circuits, and tried basic hacks. |
5 | Specialist | You've built and understand many different circuits and advanced hacks. |
6 | Advanced | You've done all that. And have designed your own circuits. You've learned to read schematics and spec sheets. You won't learn much from this blog! but thanks for visiting. |
7 | Very Advanced | You've done all that. And have done finished projects that others can use. |
8 | Professional | You can design and explain just about any circuit. You can build at professional-quality level, using knowledge beyond electronics (see below). |
9 | Expert | You blog all about it! ☺ |
Somewhere along the way, you will probably learn basic assembly skills: hand soldering, drilling, gluing. Then, some finishing skills like decorating, labeling, painting. Then, advanced assembly skills: making your own printed-circuit boards (PCBs), mounting the PCBs inside enclosures. Learning circuit modelling (i.e. SPICE programs). Sourcing parts and part substitutes. Learning industrial manufacturing techniques. Sharing your knowledge. And finally, getting paid to do all this!
